Savings Goal Timeline Calculator: a practical guide
When could regular saving reach my chosen target?
Find the first month regular contributions could reach a chosen savings target, rather than assuming daily trading profits.
By VolatileShares · Example version 1 · Updated . Hypothetical inputs, not financial recommendations or live company data.
A worked example, in plain English
The idea in 10 seconds: Build a pot month by month rather than assuming daily trading profits.
A saving timeline, not a trading-profit promise.
A fixed return is only an assumption. Fees, tax and inflation are not included.
- Months to reach entered goal
- 128
- Savings at last modeled month
- $100,618.31
- Your total contributions
- $74,000.00
Walk me through the full calculation
$10,000.00 to start and $500.00 added each month, at a constant 5% annual return, first meet $100,000.00 at month 128 (10 years and 8 months).
You supply $74,000.00 yourself; the modeled gain or loss is $26,618.31. Try a different monthly contribution or target before relying on a higher return. A million future dollars need not buy what a million buys today; use the inflation tool to check.
This is the first qualifying month-end, not a promised date.
Inputs used for this example
These are the calculator's example defaults, not suggested amounts or rates. Market calculators initially display USD. Change currency in the toolbar without creating a personal profile. Under optional Location & display settings, choose an example country for its currency and available historical CPI. Review any example household size and rent assumption before explicitly applying local assumptions: matching unedited budget/inflation fields change, while edited or restored inputs are kept. Lifestyle budgets are fictional examples, not measured national averages. Local tax, pension and borrowing links are guidance, not personal calculations. Switching currency alone does not change percentages, ages or share counts.

Work backwards from your goal
What monthly saving reaches my goal by the time limit?
Start with the target and use your years limit as the saving deadline.
Choose Work backwards, enter your target and the few essential inputs, then choose Calculate my goal. The answer is checked with the same forward calculation and applied in one step. Example assumptions are disclosed under More options. Expand Calculation details & tools only if you want more detail. Impossible or out-of-range goals show an error instead of invented numbers. Long numbers display commas while editing; calculations and saved snapshots keep the original precision.

Monthly rate = (1 + annual return / 100)^(1/12) - 1. Each month: balance = balance x (1 + monthly rate) + contribution. Stop at the first month meeting the target or the entered time limit.
What this cannot tell you
Constant hypothetical effective annual return and end-of-month deposits. Checks at month-end, up to 100 years. No fees, taxes, inflation or withdrawals; reaching a nominal dollar target is not financial independence.
Changing an assumption changes the example, not the future. Verify source dates and actual product, tax and lending terms before relying on any result. These tools do not replace appropriately qualified advice.
A larger target is not a reason to assume larger returns
At 0% growth, $100 saved at each month-end reaches $1,200 in 12 months from zero. A target can instead need more time or contributions; a million nominal future dollars is not a promise of financial freedom.
Illustrative arithmetic, not market evidence or a promise of returns.

In the interactive calculator, compare different assumptions or explicitly save a named snapshot to My browser notebook. Saving is optional and browser-only, not an account or cloud backup. Revisit it on the same browser profile; restoring never refreshes prices or assumptions.
