SEC filings: choose the document before the conclusion
A filing is a primary document, not a guarantee of investment quality. Match the form, reporting period and publication date to the question you are trying to answer.

A small map of the major forms
For typical US domestic reporting companies, a 10-K is the annual report with audited financial statements; a 10-Q provides quarterly updates with unaudited statements. An 8-K reports specified current events and may include important exhibits. Foreign issuers may use different forms.
Form 4 needs context
Form 4 reports changes in beneficial ownership for covered insiders. Transaction codes, footnotes, grants, exercises and planned transactions matter. An ownership change is not necessarily an open-market purchase or sale, and is not a reliable prediction of price direction.
A useful trick: read the footnote before the headline
For financing, inspect the exhibit and share-count notes. For earnings, compare the reporting period and accounting basis. Search the full EDGAR history when the site's recent-feed window has no matching entry; an empty recent feed does not prove nothing was filed.
A question worth asking
Does an SEC filing mean the SEC endorses the investment?
No. A filing's availability is not an endorsement or an assurance that an investment is suitable.

These explanations use financial-statement concepts and explicitly stated arithmetic. Verify each company's definitions, dates and contractual terms in its original documents. Relative-volume provider definitions are explained in our methodology.
