Earnings quality: follow profit through to cash
Profit and cash flow measure different things. Compare the income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement over consistent periods before concluding that an earnings increase is sustainable.

Bridge the profit-to-cash gap
Depreciation and stock-based compensation can affect earnings without an immediate cash payment. Receivables, inventory and payment timing can move operating cash flow. A difference between profit and cash is a question to investigate, not automatic evidence of wrongdoing.
Keep definitions comparable
GAAP profit, adjusted profit, operating cash flow and free cash flow are not interchangeable. Review reconciliations and define free cash flow explicitly. Use matching currencies and annual, quarterly or trailing periods when comparing companies.
A useful trick: remove one flattering assumption
Ask how the conclusion changes without a one-time gain or with a less favorable receivables trend. Keep your adjustment visible and explain its reason. Do not present your normalized number as a reported company figure.
A question worth asking
Is positive free cash flow enough to choose a stock?
No. Investment requirements, debt, dilution, valuation and future operating risks still matter. One metric is not a complete thesis.
